I am pleased to announce the release of Subversion Edge 2.0. It is available for download and as an update via the built-in update mechanism in Edge. This release includes a number of enhancements and fixes that have been requested by the users in our forums. You can see a complete listing of the features in the project wiki.
This release is a significant milestone in a number of ways.
It was almost exactly a year ago to the day that we launched Subversion Edge 1.0. We knew we were launching a significant new product that was going to allow users to be more productive as well as grow the adoption of Subversion. That said, the adoption rate for Subversion Edge has been staggering. We even seemed to have spawned some imitators, which is always a sign you have disrupted the market.
This marks the 10th release of Edge. When we designed Edge the single must-have feature for the first release was a robust update mechanism. This allows us to update the product so frequently without disrupting our users. This has also enabled us to deliver security fixes in the Subversion stack as quickly and effortless as it can be done.
Most significantly, this release completes our original vision for Edge. Let me explain. The original concept that led to the product we have today was to build something for our enterprise customers that would allow them to easily use the Subversion replication and proxy feature. We called this project “Subversion Edge” internally, because of the idea that they would stick these replica servers on the “Edge” of their networks. The original idea blossomed into the product we have today, and the name stuck. This release, combined with today’s release of TeamForge 6.1, delivers the replication/proxy feature. You can read more about the replication feature in our online help.
Subversion Edge users, if you are interested in the replication feature this is what you need to know.
The feature requires TeamForge 6.1, which is free for 10-users. Your existing Edge servers can all be connected to TeamForge which then provides you with powerful new capabilities for managing the permissions and delegating administration functions across your organization. You can also manage all of your Edge servers from the single web UI.
Once you have done this, you install Edge on the server you want to be the replica/proxy. There is a simple wizard on the Administration tab to convert the server to Replica mode. This will attach it to TeamForge and your Subversion master server. You can then manage which repositories are replicated from the easy to use TeamForge web user interface.
Finally, I want to personally thank all of the members of the Subversion Edge team for all of the hard work they have put into this product over the last couple years. Their passion, dedication and agility shows up in the high quality of these releases. Thanks.
